Miriam Solomon is Professor and Chair in the Philosophy Department at Temple University, and an Affiliated Professor of Women’s Studies. She received her BA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and her PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University. She works in the areas of philosophy of science, philosophy of medicine, social epistemology, feminist epistemology and philosophy of science, and medical ethics. She is the author of Social Empiricism (MIT Press, 2001), editor of several special journal issues, and author of many journal articles. She is currently completing a book on epistemology of medicine, titled Making Medical Knowledge. It discusses recent epistemic innovations in medicine, including consensus conferences, evidence-based medicine, translational medicine and narrative medicine.
Solomon is on the Editorial Board of the journal Philosophy of Science and on the Governing Board of the Philosophy of Science Association. She is on the Editorial Board of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy in the area of Philosophy of Science. She is on the organizing committee of the Philosophy of Medicine Roundtable, the Advisory Board of the Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice, and a member of the APA Committee on Philosophy and Medicine. Solomon is a Local Editorial Advisor for Hypatia and was a founding Co-Chair of the Philosophy of Science Association Women’s Caucus. She served on the APA Committee on the Status of Women from 2006-9.
